The Third Davis International Film Festival kick off

You are cordially invited to the 2017 Davis International Film Festival kick-off event on Sunday, June 25, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. We will screen “Survival in Shanghai,” the Best Documentary winner from our 2016 festival. We have also invited the documentary’s producer to our event, where you will have a chance to meet him and get more details about the film. Tickets are free; you can reserve yours online at

This documentary covers the dark history of World War II when more than six million Jews were brutally massacred by the Nazis. Against this backdrop, Shanghai received more than 25,000 Jewish refugees from Europe. Shanghai Media Group made “Survival in Shanghai” to commemorate this history. It is the largest effort by Chinese television media to find the Jewish refugees and their descendants who survived in the Shanghai Ghetto. The entire production process lasted eight months, and the film includes footage from Germany, Austria, the United States, and Israel, where about 40 survivors were interviewed.

The June 25 kick-off marks the beginning of the third annual Davis International Film Festival, which will be held October 22 at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis. In the first two years of the festival, more than 1400 films were submitted from more than 100 countries. The Davis International Film Festival is organized by the Davis Cross-Cultural Foundation and supported by many organizations and volunteers. This year, we are proud to have the support and help of the City of Davis, UC Davis Chinese Graduate and Postdoctoral Scholar Association (CGPSA), UC Davis China Center for Energy and Transportation, and International House Davis. We look forward to seeing you at the Varsity Theatre on June 25th!
